One of the reasons is that Hammer doesn't deal correctly with texture scale values that have three decimal places it will round to an incorrect value. edit: it is also true that stretching textures creatively can be useful I can't imagine what game's maps you could be looking in except maybe Alien Swarm (which is top-down and is generally an exception in a lot of ways) or CSGO (cause people often try to push texture quality in that game a lot) But no, 0.25 is pretty common. If i remember correctly, there is by default a maximum for texture scale in the engine set by mat_picmip but i might be totally wrongĬan't find a single brush texture different from size 0.25 on any official maps or even community maps Not needed, textures automatically become lower and lower quality the farther away you are (as long as they haven't been told to not do that, but that's not typical) Hardly visible things in the background up to sizes of 25, 50, and 100 I don't want an answer about why I "should avoid resizing because it's visually unappealing" or something like that, I want an answer saying something along the lines of "smaller textures are harsh on the old engine and shouldn't be used too frequently," Just to clarify. I'm only talking about the effects on game performance btw. So my question is, is there any effect at all on your level when you resize a texture on a brush? Have there been any bad effects on maps that have scared devs away from changing the texture sizes to anything other than 0.25, or is it just a coincidence that every brush texture I've closely examined was at default size? However, I've looked at official and custom maps for inspiration, and I noticed that I can't find a single brush texture different from size 0.25 on any official maps or even community maps, which is the reason why I'm asking this. I would think larger textures are cheaper, so that's why I've made hardly visible things in the background up to sizes of 25, 50, and 100 because all of it honestly looks very normal from far away, and I've also found a texture that just looked better when it was smaller (size 0.10). Hey ancient dev kit community, I've had a question on my mind about what happens when you resize brush textures.
